Shaw to captain India at ICC U19 Cricket World Cup



Mumbai batsman will look to lead his side to a record fourth title; Gill named his deputy

Prithvi Shaw will lead a 15-member Indian team at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 in New Zealand in January-February, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Sunday (December 3).
The Indian junior selection committee named Shubman Gill as his deputy. The World Cup will be held from January 13 to February 3. India is a three-time winner of the competition, the joint-most along with Australia. In the last edition of the tournament in 2016 in Bangladesh, India strolled to the final but lost a closely fought title clash against Windies.
The India team will have a preparatory camp in Bengaluru from December 8 to 22 before the event. However, Shaw and Ishan Porel will not join the camp immediately, having been given permission to play for Mumbai and Bengal respectively in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals. Shaw is Mumbai’s second highest run-getter with 521 runs this Ranji season, while Porel has ten wickets from two matches. The quarter-finals are scheduled from December 7 to 11.

India pulled off a sensational eight-wicket win over Australia in the big final of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup to become the only side in history to lift the coveted title for a record fourth time. A clinical bowling performance by India saw them restrict Australia to 216, a total that Prithvi Shaw and his men gunned down comfortably in the end - with 67 balls remaining - to etch their name in history books.
